Foreign Travel Advice

This adventurous trip takes us far down the Silk Road, along which ancient traders would journey between Europe and China, and is the perfect holiday-length trip for travellers who love the great outdoors and spectacular mountain scenery. Starting or finishing in urban Tashkent, in Uzbekistan we explore the lush farmlands of the Fergana Valley, visiting some of the historical highlights en route. We will then head into the favourite Central Asian country of many of our travellers - the remote and mountainous land of Kyrgyzstan and the dramatically-rugged Tian Shan mountain range. Home to nomadic peoples who will be our hosts during our journey through the wilds of this beautiful country. Hiking, riding and staying with nomads, we will journey across this region slowly to enjoy a country famed for its hospitality.

Overland through Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley in local transport
See the silk-weavers of the Fergana Valley
Stay in traditional felt yurts at the incredible Song Kol Lake
Experience the daily life of the Kyrgyz mountain shepherds
See a demonstration from a traditional eagle hunter near Kochkor
Learn how Kyrgyz carpets and hats are typically made
Trek into the wilds of the Jeti-Oghuz Gorge
Walk around the incredible scenery of the Chong Kemin valley
Relax in the picturesque city of Bishkek

If you enjoy challenging yourself and being slightly outside your comfort zone, this trip offers plenty of opportunities. Ideal for lovers of the outdoors and spectacular scenery. We will travel through mountains at over 3000 metres altitude at times. Wild camping combined with yurt home stays and small local hotels are the norm. Horse riding and easy trekking.

See the silk-weavers of the Fergana Valley at the Yodgorlik Silk Factory

See the traditional felt workshops or Kochkor and learn about how Kyrgyz carpets and hats are typically made here

Day 1 - Tashkent (13th June 2021)

Border Information: if joining in Tashkent, you will most likely enter Uzbekistan at Tashkent International Airport (IATA code: TAS).

There will be a pre-departure meeting at 10:00am - please look out for a note from your leader at the reception of the joining hotel upon arrival with more details about this important meeting. Your leader will need to carefully check your visas at this initial meeting.

The rest of the day is free to explore the Uzbek capital.

Please note that many of the options listed below will only be possible for those with extra time in Tashkent before the start of your trip with us - please contact the Sales team if you would like to book pre-tour accommodation with us to have extra time exploring Tashkent.

*Important note - do not bring any medicines containing tramadol, codeine, temazepam, morphine or opiates to Central Asia. These are illegal in all circumstances in most of Central Asia and you will risk arrest. If in doubt about a particular medicine, please do not bring it. See the notes at the bottom for more details.*

*Another important note - please be aware that all itineraries in Kyrgyzstan are highly weather-dependent. The itinerary described in these notes are a statement of best intention, but we must approach each trip in Kyrgyzstan with a large degree of flexibility, as our leaders and local guides will have to 'play things by ear' according to the local conditions and weather. In low season certain routes become impossible and it may become far too cold to camp - in all cases there are fantastic and well-tried alternatives in place which means we can always run an excellent and comprehensive trip here, but please do not treat the exact details of the itinerary listed here as gospel - thanks for your understanding!*

Fabio S

Great crew, great itinerary, amazing experience

Leonie P

Fantastic group and the crew went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. Loved the people and camaraderie - the truck is a great set up.

Christopher M

Just excellent! A unique way to experience a country and its culture.

Ronald W

The guides were the best you can have for a trip like this. Absolutely wonderfull! If I would do a trip around the world, with no one else than our three guides. Thank You for all!!!

Alice W

This is my second trip with Dragoman and I genuinely couldn't see myself taking a trip with another company again. Everything about how Dragoman runs their trips is amazing. The style of travel, the fact there is no age limit, the way you get right of the beaten track, the incredible tour leaders that run it, and the experiences and memories you make. Everyone in Dragoman is so passionate about travel and this really shows in the trips.

Ainslie C

Enjoyed the beautiful scenery It was good to spend more than one day in one spot

Veena B

It was really well organised and I like the way the trip was adapted to allow for people's requests and the weather.

Emma M

We drove past some beautiful places, stayed in gorgeous campsites, and some lovely Yurts and saw so much in the two weeks! I feel like we really saw Kyrgyzstan and experiences such as the goat polo and eagle hunting were super interesting!

David P

Fantastic scenery, excellent group of fellow travellers.

Rachael H

I loved the wild camping and homestays

Hannah E

Song Kul was the best bit for me, the yurts were so fun and the food up there was amazing. The horse riding was also really fun up there. I loved it, the leaders were amazing and the trip was so much fun.

Megan E

It was absolutely wonderful. Beyond all my expectations. The group gelled into a real team.

Alberdina W

Loved Song Köl Lake and Altyn Arashan

Peter R

Begaim proved to be a very pleasant and approachable guide, who led a large group on a number of activities.

Richard D

Farhad in Kyrgyzstan was brilliant.

Patricia R

Begaimin Kyrgyzstan was perfect. Very helpful all the time and knowledgable.

Graeme S

Euan and Domingo were absolutely incredible - helpful and informative and always going that extra step to assist all the travellers - some of whom required a lot of tact and patience!

Jennifer P

Ilya was very informative about Uzbekistan.

Joseph K

Jalol was our guide in Uzbekistan and he was - far and away - the best guide we've had. He was full of information, gave us detailed explanations of the sights we were visiting (even quizzed us on them), constantly put events in perspective with respect to the local culture, and was a great story teller. He was full of tips and ideas, and went out of his way to help members of the group who wanted to do optional activities. Jalol was a big part of making Uzbekistan a most memorable part of our journey.

Louise K

Gino, full of enthusiasm and energy - excellent leader. Jim, excellent driver, safe and reliable. Both great fun and worked well together.

Yvonne D

Both crew were excellent and dealt incredibly well with all matters.

Madeleine H

Guides in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan were excellent.

Robyn D

Pleasant, very approachable and capable guides.

Thomas D

Excellent local guides - good pick!

Christian F

Excellent guide!

Rosemary B

Our guides in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan (Said and Jalol) were outstanding.

Christine G

Fred was awesome.

JOAN L

Both Tim and Lynsey worked very well together and were very helpful.

Eveline L

I had a really pleasant time! I can't wait to tell others about it.

Jennifer R

I loved Begaim, our guide in Kyrgyzstan and wished I could have continued on in Uzbekistan with Jalal as he was fantastic as well!

Alexander M

This was my first Drago trip and I think I realized that I'm more into visiting cities and towns, and staying in upgrades than roughing it.

Michael H

It was honestly one of the best travel experiences I've had - all round great and I wish I was still out there with them.
