Pakistan is an extraordinary country to visit and is not what most travellers expect. This journey is designed to show the many faces of the country, from its great chaotic and churning cities to its spectacular mountains. The heart of this trip is about exploring the Karakoram region, including settlements such as Gilgit and Hunza, but also the mountains themselves. It is not a journey for the faint hearted, with switchback roads climbing and tumbling through mountain passes and gorges, past vast fast flowing mountain torrents. Hiking in the magnificent Karakoram is intrinsic to the journey and there will be plenty of opportunity to explore below the towering peaks of the Himalayas as well as some of the ancient bazaars, forts and palaces. Perhaps one of the most historic cities in Pakistan is Lahore and we will allow enough time to get under the skin or this great city and to find out about its Mogul past, as well as taking an afternoon to witness the most bizarre event in all of India and Pakistan, the flag lowering ceremony at the Wagah border.
This is not a trip for the faint hearted and is both culturally and physically challenging. It is a trip for those that understand blending into the local culture; it's a trip for travellers not tourists and you need to come with an open mind. There will be long days driving and accommodation can be basic.
There will be a pre-departure meeting at 10.00am - please look out for a note from your leader at the reception of the joining hotel upon arrival with more details about this important meeting.
After the meeting we will visit the Old Walled City with its narrow, dimly lit alleys. Here you should be able look at all the local handicrafts and jewellery through the Bazaars.
In the late afternoon we will drive to Wagah border to watch the flag lowering ceremony. The lowering of the flags is a daily military practice that the security forces of India and Pakistan have jointly followed since 1959.
Please note that many of the options listed below will only be possible for those with extra time in Lahore before the start of your trip with us - please contact the the Dragoman Sales team or your sales agent if you would like to book pre-tour accommodation with us to have extra time exploring Lahore.
Some of the highlights will include a visit to Lahore Fort the Badshahi Mosque, Jahangirs Tomb and the Lahore Museum.
In the late afternoon we will reach the old city of Rawalpindi and the Raja (king) Bazaar. A stop in the silver and gold bazaars will give us an insight into watching the traditional craftsmen at work.

In the afternoon we will walk along the main water channels which will give us the chance to see Hunza at its best.
This afternoon we will make our way back to Karimabad where we will stay for the night.
