Prices are per person for the cost of the land trip only, except where stated otherwise, and is based on shared accommodation. The up-to-date prices are shown on the website and may differ from those in the brochure, which were correct at the time of print. Please note that a ‘kitty’ cost is payable in addition to the trip price -this is a central local fund managed by the group for any group expenditure (more about kitties below).
Please note that the trip price and kitty exclude:
- Optional activities
- Travel insurance
- Connecting flights and airport transfers, personal taxes (including personal border taxes) and any other transportation costs while not on the trip
- Passports and visas, vaccinations and kit
- Extra accommodation or upgrades
- Contingency route expenses in case of war, flood, etc
- Any further spending money
Payments and deposits
To secure your booking, we require a non-refundable deposit. Final payment is due no later than 56 days before you travel (or in full for bookings made within 56 days of travelling).
What’s a kitty?
In addition to the trip price on our overlanding trips, you will also be required to pay a kitty specified for your trip (please note that there is no kitty on our Family Trips). Each customer joining a trip pays into a local group fund. The fund is managed by the Dragoman crew and the kitty accounts can be viewed by all throughout the trip.
The kitty covers all things that the whole group does, such as:
- Hotel accommodation and campsite fees
- Meals whilst camping (not whilst staying in hotels)
- Activities listed as included (e.g. National Park or historical site entrances, excursions, etc.)
The kitty system operates at cost, without commission or profit. It is unique to overlanding and allows us to have complete flexibility and transparency on our trips. You can see exactly how your money is being spent, and by buying locally we keep costs competitive, ensure that you're getting the best value for money, and ensure that the money we spend goes directly to supporting the communities we travel through.
We constantly update the kitty prices on our website and the kitty advertised in the brochure is an estimate at the time of printing. Prices can go up or down with no notice, and exchange rate fluctuations will affect costs. On all Dragoman operated trips, if there is money left in the kitty at the end of your trip, then this is divided between the group and you receive a refund. Once you book your trip it is very important that you check our website on a regular basis and just before departure for any changes to the kitty amount.
The kitty is payable in cash at the start of your trip (in instalments at the start of each individual leg on combination trips). Alternatively you can pay in advance via a bank transfer 3-4 weeks before the start of your trip. Please click here for futher information. Please note that prepayment is not available for our trips to West Africa, Iran, Tajikistan, Pakistan, any trip in Africa north of Nairobi and Alaska only trips. Please also note that we cannot accept traveller's cheques on our trips.
You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget a sensible amount for things like drinks, shopping, optional activities, tipping and laundry. Remember to also budget for any visas to be obtained en route. We appreciate that it’s hard to know exactly how much money you will need when you’re travelling through new countries and areas.
To make budgeting a little easier we have included some guidelines in the trip information. The Essential Information document for your trip will give you a rough idea of what previous travellers have spent on average. The Trip Itinerary gives approximate costs for some optional activities and by reading the itinerary thoroughly you will know what’s included and what isn’t.

Tipping may not be customary to you and is entirely voluntary - however it can be of great significance to the people who take care of you during your trip.
The Dragoman crew may be travelling with you for many weeks or months and usually they become good friends with most members of the group. It is sometimes easy to forget that they do work hard to ensure that you do have a great trip. If you are happy with the service and feel you would like to tip them, they certainly would appreciate it. It is usual to tip the local guides who live and travel with you through their home country. We recommend USD1 to USD4 per person per day, but check with your crew for an appropriate amount. For general tipping in restaurants and on excursions, it can be useful to hold on to your smaller notes and coins to make tipping easier.
Cash or card?
We recommend bringing a sensible mix of cash and ATM cards on your trip. A small amount of local currency can be handy when you first arrive to your destination but bear in mind that many countries have strict regulations about the amount of their own local currency you are allowed to import - if you are found with amounts in excess of the allowed amounts, it may well be confiscated.
It's always a good idea to bring some cash USD or EUR that you can change rather than solely relying on cards. Apart from the convenience of being able to change money in many more places, you will sometimes get a much better exchange rate for cash. ATMs are available in most areas but are not always reliable. You may also find your card doesn't work in all ATMs. Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted in some major cities, but be prepared for high commission charges in some places depending on your bank and card provider.
Make sure your USD and EUR notes are no more than 8 years old, clean and in good condition. Worn or damaged notes or any that have been written on are often refused by money changers. Please also bring a mixture of small and large denominations - you may get a better rate for changing larger denomination bills, but in more remote areas it can be difficult to change amounts over USD50.
We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. Please make sure you have access to the equivalent of an extra USD400 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. border closures, transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures). Sometimes these things necessitate last minute changes to enable our trips to continue to run, and as a result there may be some extra costs involved.
